Vern Kennedy

vernkennedy.jpgVern is another Canadian Composer who is little known outside the Toronto area. He is an accomplished trumpet player and group singer having sung back-up on a myriad of Canadian television shows in the earlier days of live broadcast variety television.

When he was 6 years old Vern Kennedy joined his hometown band, was handed a second-hand cornet and started his lifetime musical journey.  Trumpet and music lessons followed during his formative years and when he became a student at the University of Toronto, even though he was enrolled in an arts and science program, he found himself constantly among music students.  In order to pay for his education he soon turned to music, both as a vocalist and musician, as a means of income.  Vern’s long professional group singing career included such CBC television series as the Juliette show, Wayne and Shuster and Tommy Hunter, to name a few, as well as countless radio and TV commercials and recording sessions.  As a trumpet player Vern combined studio work with the “Wedding, Bar Mitzvah” circuit.  Along the way he began arranging and composing, with many of his vocal compositions being recorded.  While filling the role of music consultant and as one of the arrangers on the Tommy Hunter show, Vern also taught in the Humber College music program, an assignment that lasted for 6 years. Today Vern is still indulging his love of singing as a member of, and arranger for, The Canadian Singers.  As well, as a member of the Markham Concert band, Vern not only continues to play trumpet but has also composed many concert works for the band which are featured in the band’s concert series.  From his start in a small Southwestern Ontario community band to the enjoyment that he finds today as he plays and composes for the Markham Concert band, Vern Kennedy continues to have an exciting and personally-rewarding musical journey through this life.
